How the Warhammer 40k army builder works

Tactical 40k's army builder is free and runs in your browser. It uses the 40 faction codices on this site, so every unit, detachment and Enhancement comes from the same 11th Edition data you read in the Codex Archive.

  1. Choose a faction from any of the 40 codices.
  2. Pick a battle size from 500 to 3,000 points (500, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000, 3,000 pts). The running total shows how many points you have left.
  3. Choose a detachment. This unlocks its rule, Enhancements and Stratagems.
  4. Add units and pick a Warlord. Choose each unit's size and wargear, and give Enhancements to your Characters.
  5. Save, export or take it to battle. Keep the list on this device or in your account, export a PDF or text copy, or load it straight into the battle tracker.

Legality checks

The list is checked as you build. It warns you when:

  • the army goes over its points limit (3,000 points at most);
  • no detachment is chosen;
  • there is no Warlord, more than one, or the Warlord isn't a Character;
  • a unit is taken more times than its datasheet allows (Epic Heroes once only);
  • you have too many Enhancements for the battle size, take one twice, use one from another detachment, or give one to a non-Character or an Epic Hero;
  • a points cost isn't confirmed. You'll see "Points not verified", so check that cost in the official Warhammer 40,000 app before an event.

If you try to add a unit that would break a rule, the builder explains why first. You can still add it, but the list will be marked as not legal.

BattleScribe (.rosz) import

Already have a list in BattleScribe? Choose your faction first, then use “Import .rosz roster” above and pick your .rosz or .ros file. It's read in your browser and never uploaded. Units are matched to this site's datasheets with their model counts, so the legality checks and the battle tracker work straight away. Any unit that couldn't be matched is listed so you can add it by hand.

Need a rule while you build? Search the 11th Edition rules index or open the rulebook.
